As part of their study of micro-organisms, Year 5/6 were invited to Pizza Express in Cardiff to see how they go about making pizzas. The class had the opportunity to see how the ingredients are stored in their fridges and freezers. We all got to experience how cold the walk-in deep freezer was and learned about why it is necessary to store the ingredients in such a way. We then had a bush-tucker trial of our own with the staff laying out a plate of some of the pizza toppings that they use in their store. A range of capers, anchoves, goat's cheese, pepperoni, mozzarella and baby mozzarella was offered for everyone to try. The cheese proved to be a big success, as did the pepperoni. However, the anchoves and capers were less popular!

The children then got to make their pizza, starting off by flattening the dough into a pizza shape, shaking off the flour and adding the tomato sauce. We all made a simple cheese and tomato pizza, but were all surprised by how nice it tasted once it was cooked. We were shown how to make the pizza boxes which some people found easier than others. The staff were kind enough to allow us to eat our pizza in the store.

We then moved on to Cardiff museum where the class were put into groups and given specific letters of the alphabet and a recording book and microphone. They then had to look for items of interest beginning with their specific letters ready for an encyclopedia which is going to completed in school.
